Councils in England have to publish every payment they make above a threshold. This site takes those files as the councils publish them, works out the totals, and says on every page what is held, what is missing and which document each figure came from.

What every council has published, against the quarterly rule
England at a glance
These counts are read from the published data every time the site is built, never typed in. A council with no total is not a council that spends nothing: it is one whose figures have not reconciled against its own outturn return yet, and its page says which.
What is on a council page
What it published
The total it paid out in its most recent complete year, the number of payments behind that total, its largest suppliers and its month by month pattern.
What is held
Every financial year of records held, how much of each year, and whether that year reconciles against the council's own published outturn or budget.
Budget figures
Net revenue expenditure over time, the split by service, where the money came from, the council's own Band D element and its reserves, from the returns it makes to central government.
How to read anything here
A total on this site is a total of what a council published above its threshold. It is a part of what a council spends, not all of it: wages and payments below the threshold are not in it. Nothing here is estimated, and councils are never ranked against each other, because the periods held differ from council to council and a ranking across them would be false.
